Dear Ashley-Clarke,

May I refer you to

Howe's letter to me of the 1st of

April (F 1793/177/10) about the

Chinese soldiers detained at

Hong Kong. We have now had the

attached further telegram from the

Acting Governor (addressed to

Tokyo) asking for this problem to

be reconsidered. We have every

sympathy with the view expressed

and with the interned soldiers

themselves. Subject to Sir Robert

Craigie's opinion, we hope at least

that you will find it possible to

agree to the release of the

medically unfit.
